The owners of this resort-inspired home in Spain were faced with a typical outdoor living dilemma – how to make a terrace connected to the pool resistant to sudden rains, yet ready to embrace the Mediterranean sun? Our mobile sunroom provided the perfect solution.
At the beginning of the project, the open terrace on site had a wide view, but the pool area was not covered, and the space was left unused because of the serious waterlogging on rainy days. The owner wanted to preserve the original streamlined design language of the building while realizing three core requirements through a flexible and adjustable roof system: all-weather rain protection, intelligent opening and closing for ventilation, and an aesthetic expression that blended with the modern villa style.
The design team innovatively used aerospace-grade aluminum rails with high-transmittance polycarbonate panels to create a 12-meter L-shaped canopy over the pool. This seemingly lightweight structure actually contains precision engineering – the electric drive system supports remote control to open and close the canopy in two minutes, converting it from a fully enclosed canopy to an open canopy; the double-layered hollow panels not only insulate 90% of the ultraviolet rays, but also guide the rainwater to drain to the side in a sloping cross-section, avoiding dripping interference in the pool area.
The final result goes beyond purely functional needs: during the rainy season, the fully expanded sunroom becomes a transparent glass dome, allowing the owners to enjoy the heated swimming pool in the rain; on a clear night, the terrace instantly transforms into a stargazing platform when 70% of the roof area is slid open. What’s more surprising is that this system echoes the original curved lines of the building, reflecting dynamic light and shadow under the sunlight, and becoming an art installation in itself to enhance the value of the property.
This solution, which combines intelligent technology with natural aesthetics, has now become a new benchmark for high-end residences in Spain – not only has it redefined the boundaries of outdoor living scenarios, it has also proved that good design can make the climate no longer a limitation but an adjustable element of life.
